Starting sports activities at a young age can o\ufb00er enduring benefits for women.\u00a0<\/span>It’s widely recognized<\/span>\u00a0that this leads to a substantial boost in self-esteem and social integration while also fostering physical and mental health. Being involved in sports often aligns with a heightened sense of personal accomplishment, pride, and the spark of creativity. Yet, female athletes encounter unique cultural and psychosocial hurdles throughout their lives, challenges that their male counterparts rarely face.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0partially accounts for the male predominance seen across most sports disciplines in Brazil. These barriers pose significant impediments to the careers of female athletes in general. However, the situation proves to be even more challenging for Brazilian Paralympic athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite facing less funding than non-paralympic athletes, more modest \ufb01nancial rewards, and less media visibility and national recognition, these women are prepared to showcase their determination and courage. When talking to them, it becomes clear that they aspire to overcome all obstacles and shift the narrative that describes them as inspiring solely due to their physical conditions. They yearn to\u00a0<\/span>be recognized<\/span>\u00a0as women capable of achieving\u00a0<\/span>great<\/span>\u00a0feats.<\/span><\/p>\n

[Credit: Brazilian Paralympic Committee]<\/figcaption><\/figure>One such athlete is judoka Alana Maldonado, who stands out for her achievements on the mat and her relentless \ufb01ght for equality and inclusion in sports. “Yes, there is a lot of prejudice against women in sports in general, especially in Paralympic sports. I think this inequality of recognition persists, and my Paralympic medal would not carry the same weight as a traditional Olympic medal. I still feel this difference, unfortunately. Today, the female Paralympic athlete increasingly shows strength and ability to achieve her dreams, objectives, and significant results. Some even managed to win unprecedented titles, like me, a world champion in Paralympic judo. We are increasingly \ufb01ghting for this space and recognition, and we have been succeeding,” shares Alana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease at the age of 14, a genetic condition that led to the progressive loss of central vision, Alana Maldonado saw her world change dramatically. Currently, with approximately 10% vision in both eyes, she did not allow her condition to de\ufb01ne her boundaries. On the contrary, Alana became a dominant force in the up to 70kg category of the Tokyo Paralympics, where her technique and determination led her to become the \ufb01rst Brazilian woman to win gold in Paralympic judo. In addition to this historic achievement, she has amassed an impressive array of victories, including the silver medal at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016 and gold at the Lisbon World Championship in 2018, solidifying her status as one of the\u00a0<\/span>greatest<\/span>\u00a0Paralympic judokas in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are here to show the strength of women. A significant milestone was the record participation of female athletes in the Lima Parapan American Games. This edition was historic for the number, quality, and competitive spirit we demonstrated. We are on a signi\ufb01cant rise, tirelessly \ufb01ghting for our space,” emphasizes Alana, highlighting the advancement of women in Paralympic sports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognition<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The athletes are unanimous: The Paralympic Games are still striving to achieve the recognition and appreciation they deserve. For instance, during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the opening ceremony attracted over 30 million viewers, while the Paralympics reached just over 2 million. This disparity re\ufb02ects the need for\u00a0<\/span>greater<\/span>\u00a0support and visibility for Paralympic athletes. Ed\u00eania Garcia, a Paralympic swimmer and advocate for equality in sports, argues that the \ufb01ght for recognition is constant and essential for advancing Paralympic sports. “Many still view Paralympic sports through a reductive lens as merely therapy or rehabilitation, not a high-competition arena.\u00a0<\/span>This view is a profound misconception, as\u00a0<\/span>the level of dedication and seriousness we devote<\/span>\u00a0to sports is extremely high.<\/span> The barriers are many, and the need to prove our worth is a constant, especially for women, who face the social stigma that sports would be a predominantly male domain”, says Ed\u00eania.<\/span><\/p>\n

[Credit: Brazilian Paralympic Committee]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Ed\u00eania Garcia, born with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a degenerative neurological condition, did not allow the progressive loss of movement to limit her potential. At 15, she was already a world champion, and at 17, the youngest athlete in the Brazilian delegation at the Athens Paralympic Games in 2004. Her journey\u00a0<\/span>is marked<\/span>\u00a0by participation in world championships and Paralympic Games in Beijing, London, and Rio. Ed\u00eania added four gold medals to her legacy at the Tokyo Paralympics, rea\ufb03rming her status as an icon in Paralympic sports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ed\u00eania clari\ufb01es: “Being called an example of inspiration can be limiting when people focus only on physical characteristics. As someone who is LGBTQIA+ and lives with a disability, I am much more than a symbol of overcoming. I desire that people see me as a woman pursuing her goals, targets, and dreams, where disability is just a part of who I am, not the totality of my identity.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Susana Schnarndorf,\u00a0<\/span>also<\/span>\u00a0a Paralympic swimmer, echoes this sentiment: “There are still those who look at us with pity, without recognizing Paralympic sports as a high-level competition. Disability\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>seen<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0a daily obstacle, but that is not my view. Sport is for everyone, regardless of physical condition or gender. It is inclusive and has the power to transform lives.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0is the message we defend and live every day.”<\/span><\/p>\n

[Credit: Brazilian Paralympic Committee]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Susana, an exemplary athlete in triathlon, had already won six Ironman titles \u2014 the prestigious international triathlon circuit \u2014 and had been crowned \ufb01ve-time champion of the Brazilian Triathlon Championship when, at 37, she faced a new challenge: she was diagnosed with\u00a0<\/span>Shy-Drager syndrome, also known as Multiple System Atrophy.<\/span>\u00a0Despite the diagnosis, Susana did not slow down. She stood out in the Paralympic scene, becoming a world champion in 2013 and winning a medal at the Rio Paralympics in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n
